Audi A7 Reviewed

Andy Williams - Monday, September 19, 2011

When the Audi A7 demonstrator arrived on site it caused quite a stir - a interesting concept on paper, turned out to be a great looker in the flesh!

The model we drove was the 3.0TDI Quattro SE and, on starting it up, sounded sportier than expected from a diesel engine. Once on the move it felt very stable and predictable, although not as rapid as expected from 245bhp. However, looking at the speedo revealed that we were moving much faster than it seemed - this is truely a GT style of car which can eat up distance with aplomb!

Whilst the exterior is pleasant on the eye, the interior is extremely well worked and cossets the driver in a fair degree of luxury. The only issue is that adding on the many driver aids racks up the price significantly. That said, I was more that content with the 'basic' level of equipment, which sets the bar for this type of car.

In everyday use, the car proved to be extremely practical. The hatch, whilst not competing with genuine load luggers, gives a surprising amount of carrying capacity - 2 mountain bikes carried with relative ease!

Highlights

  • Deceptively quick yet frugal engine
  • Low CO2
  • Superb handling
  • Clear bluetooth phone reception
  • Standard DAB radio, which was probably best in class.
  • Hatchback practicality
Lowlights

  • Slightly hesitant gearbox
  • Options can add significantly to the purchase price
  • Compromised headroom in the rear

Whilst the market for this type of vehicle will be relatively small, Audi has created an extremely desireable and versatile car, which compares very favourably with it's competition. It should be a great success, albeit in low volumes!
