We were delighted to have volunteers from staff to join the Hampton in Arden Speedwatch campaign. Since the introduction of the scheme local speeding has drastically reduced, making the village’s roads considerably safer. Our volunteers were instructed by Police Officers from Shirley Station and Parish Councillor Gary Wood.
Remarketing Manager Andy McCabe is one of those involved:
“Along with my colleague Colin and two members of the local community, we began our “stake-out” at 8:15 in the morning under the supervision of a local Police Officer. Our location was Old Station Road, just outside the Fleet Hire office. How many of our colleagues would we catch speeding to reach the office on time?
“In the one-hour shift we recorded 125 vehicles, and although many people slowed down on seeing us in our fluorescent jackets, there were still 6 caught travelling at more than 38mph, enough to trigger a letter to be sent to them advising them that they have been recorded travelling in excess of the speed limit. For repeat offenders a second warning letter is sent, but a third incident can trigger a fine. Of the 6 vehicles we caught, I’m pleased to report that none were Fleet Hire staff!

Fleet Hire Operations Director Chris Joyce explained our reasons for getting involved: “Being part of the leasing industry, we’re constantly reminded of the dangers of speeding, and joining the Speedwatch scheme enables us to give back to the local community in a way that fits in with our desire to promote responsible and eco-friendly motoring.”
